Metro Atlanta Schools Receive GreenWorks! Environmental Grants from Project Learning Tree and Esurance
Project Learning Tree (PLT), a national environmental education program sponsored by the American Forest Foundation, and Esurance, the direct-to-consumer personal auto insurance company, have announced the 19 recipients of environmental service-learning grants through PLT's GreenWorks! initiative with Esurance.

Begun in 1992, GreenWorks! grants give students a chance to apply classroom learning to community projects, in conjunction with environmental education materials that PLT provides to teachers through professional development workshops. Esurance partnered with PLT in early 2007 to bring these grants to schools in communities where their associates work and live.

The four Georgia schools and projects funded by Esurance are as follows:
  • Spelman College in Atlanta will partner undergraduates studying to be teachers with elementary school students to form the Green Urban Students (G.U.S). G.U.S. is a program that will empower young students living in urban areas to serve as agents for the preservation and restoration of their communities' green spaces. Community workshops are scheduled for March 29 and April 19, 2008.
  • Creekview High School in Canton will expand its recycling efforts by distributing recycling bins throughout the rest of the school. Currently, recycling bins are only located in the lunchroom. Students will then design and build an outdoor learning center made of recycled materials so that maximum awareness of the recycling initiative can occur.
  • Chattahoochee High School in Alpharetta will design and plant a small replica of the gardens of Thomas Jefferson's Monticello. The project will involve students from social studies, American history, biology, math, and career tech classes. They will also harvest the garden and donate food to local community organizations.
  • Taylor Middle School in Alpharetta will launch a Landscape Campaign through the students' Evergreen Club. Students will design an area in the front of the school where select plants and flowers can thrive. They will take on responsibility for the ongoing care and maintenance of the area.
The following project was also awarded funding from the GreenWorks! Program:
  • Patrick Henry Middle School in Stockbridge program PLANTS (Putting Learning and Nature Together for Students): Middle school students will utilize their math, geography, and science skills as they design an outdoor nature center, including a greenhouse, focusing on native plants and crops, habitat preservation, plant studies, and aquatic habitats.
"Engaging young people in environmental stewardship was at the heart of why Esurance teamed with PLT to provide GreenWorks! grants in the communities where our associates work and live," said Kristin Brewe, Esurance Director of Brand and Public Relations. "By fostering a lasting bond between young people and our environment, our communities will benefit for years to come."

"Esurance is helping PLT extend GreenWorks! grants to exciting and worthwhile projects that may not have been able to go forward otherwise," said Kathy McGlauflin, Senior Vice President of Education for the American Forest Foundation. "PLT and Esurance share a commitment to leadership, environmental education, and community participation."

Esurance associates will volunteer with schools and youth-groups to fulfill the goals of each GreenWorks! project. In addition to the Atlanta area, schools near Dallas, Phoenix, Sioux Falls and Sacramento also received grants.
