Energy Crisis Front and Center at Capitol Rally

The State Capitol was the site of an Energy Independence Rally held on August 6 to highlight the need for government leaders to take action to solve the nation's energy problems.

"It's time to put America first and political careers last," said State Senator Ross Tolleson, R-Perry.

Tolleson was the primary initiator of the event, which included remarks from Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle and from several whose lives and businesses are being adversely impacted by skyrocketing fuel costs.

GFA Board member John Lane of Coastal Logging in Brunswick commented on the impact of rising fuel costs on the forestry businesses in his area. A sobering part of his remarks included the reading of a long list of businesses in his area that have failed in 2008 largely due to the fuel situation.

"I've done my part," said Lane. "There are no more rabbits to pull out of the hat. I can't do any more."

Tolleson and others called on the Congress to quickly pass a comprehensive energy plan aimed freeing the nation from its reliance on energy from potentially unreliable sources.

It's time for our leaders to "lead us out of the darkness" in energy in our energy preparedness, said Senator Tolleson.
