Representative Richard Royal to Speak at GFA Regional Forestry Meeting in Forsyth
On Tuesday, September 2, from 6:00 - 8:30 PM, the Georgia Forestry Association will hold its Forsyth Regional Meeting at the Public Safety Training Center. This event will mark GFA's 4th regional meeting of the year. The GFA regional meeting is an excellent opportunity to stay current with Association news, gain valuable educational experience, or just catch up with old friends in forestry.

Three excellent speakers are scheduled to speak at the meeting. Reggie Thackston, Private Lands Program Manager, Georgia DNR Wildlife Division, will give a presentation on managing for wildlife on private property. He has been a biologist for 29 years and worked in his current position as Private Lands Program Manager for 13. His program will cover technical and financial assistance available to landowners in Georgia.

George Lowerts, manager of AborGen's Bellville nursery will give a presentation on genetics and tree improvement. His presentation will draw from his, and ArborGen's, considerable experience in the field. Lowertz will explain why buying genetically improved trees provides an economic advantage to the landowner. ArborGen is supported by more than 100 researchers and plant scientists from the United States, Brazil, and New Zealand.

Representative Richard Royal will address the audience on the Forest Land Protection Act of 2008. Representative Royal sponsored the act which will be voted on by Georgia citizens as Amendment 1 in November. "Richard has been a strong advocate of Georgia's forests for as long as I have known him," says State Senator Michael Meyer von Bremen. "He recognizes the importance of the forests to landowners, foresters, our environment, and employees in the timber industry."
