6/8/2009 House Speaker: Special session of the legislature "highly likely"
On June 3, Speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives Glenn Richardson warned that a special session of the legislature is "highly likely" due to the fiscal challenges facing Georgia. Richardson was speaking to the Georgia Chamber of Commerce's Government Affairs Council meeting at St. Simons Island.
Citing low revenue collections in May, Richardson said that lawmakers probably will meet later in the summer with the goal of cutting an additional $1 - 1.5 billion dollars from the current state budget. Revenue figures for last month were significantly lower this year than in 2008. The Speaker said that Governor Perdue and legislative leaders will wait for June and July's results before making the decision to call legislators back to Atlanta.
