Input wanted on forestry report |

The Georgia Forestry Commission is seeking comments on its new report detailing Georgia's forest conditions and strategies to address issues and challenges. A draft version of the Georgia Statewide Forest Resources Assessment and Strategy is available by logging onto the GFC website at GaTrees.org. Input received will be used to help refine the plan and make it more useful for the protection and conservation of Georgia's working forests.
The Statewide Forest Resources Assessment and Strategy was mandated by the 2008 Farm Bill and is required to be submitted by June, 2010. This Assessment provides a comprehensive analysis of forest-related conditions, trends, threats and opportunities in the state and delineates priorities within rural and urban forest landscapes. Additionally, long term strategies are included for investing federal, state and other resources to manage these identified priority landscapes and issues, while meeting national, regional and state themes or guidance.
The Georgia Forestry Commission has worked with key partners and stakeholders in numerous disciplines to gather program-specific input for critical issues including water quality, forest health, conservation easements, the effects of urbanization, sustainable community forestry and much more. The Assessment and Strategies incorporate major current initiatives such as the State Wildlife Action Plan and the Southern Wildfire Risk Assessment. The University of Georgia has developed geospatial data layers that identify priority areas for the report.
To reach as many Georgia citizens and forestry stakeholders as possible, readers are encouraged share the link to the online draft with friends and colleagues. All comments must be submitted by 4:30 p.m. on May 6, 2010.
