Honoring a life well lived and a living legend |
|
Last month, a delegation representing the National Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) made its way around Georgia in celebration of the agency's 75 years of service to the nation. One very important stop along the way was Soperton in east Georgia's Treutlen County where the NRCS entourage, the Georgia Association of Conservation District Supervisors, and friends from all over gathered to honor one of its earliest champions, Jim L. Gillis, Jr. Gillis currently serves as chair of the Ohoopee River Soil & Water Conservation District continues today as the longest serving conservation district supervisor in the country.
A legend to anyone who is connected to Georgia forestry and agriculture, Jim L., 93, accepted yet one more acclamation with a humility, dignity and brevity that those who know him have come to expect. Georgia Forestry Association president in 1961 and recipient of the Association's highest honor, its Wise Owl Award in 2007.
Jim L., the Georgia Forestry Association salutes you for the many contributions you have made to the forestry community for longer than most anyone can remember and for doing so in a way that has always set a sterling example for those around you and for those who have followed in your gigantic footsteps.
