Candidate Roy Barnes attacks forest land property tax programs
In a June 12 article in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution which reported on a gubernatorial candidate debate in Savannah last week, public school funding was a major topic addressed by candidates vying to be the state's next chief executive. The article noted that in his comments former governor Roy Barnes said "that there are about 200 tax exemptions and some, like the timberland exemption, are crippling school systems."

Barnes is the odds-on favorite among most political observers to be the Democratic nominee to challenge the Republicans' hold on the state's top office in November. Should he be successful in his bid, he likely will have very difficult time pushing any major initiatives through the Republican House of Representatives and State Senate.
