Susan Meyers- 2009 Outstanding Educator
Susan works as an educator with the Stone Mountain Memorial Association. Susan was trained as a PLT educator in the early 90’s by Carla Rapp and then went on to become a full fledged facilitator in 2005. Two of Susan’s friends nominated her for this award; Jennifer McCoy, Environmental Programs Coordinator with Cobb County Water Quality Lab and Dale Higdon, retired forester from the Georgia Forestry Commission.
In 2007, Jennifer McCoy worked closely with Susan as she acted as her PLT mentor to assist her in obtaining her PLT Facilitator training. Jen said that "Susan conducts an impressive workshop. She is incredibly organized, provides great free resources to supplement the curriculum, and works very hard to create an engaging agenda. She’s very familiar with the activities, having used them with students and scouts for a number of years."
Dale Higdon has known Susan for 25 years and worked with her on various educational projects starting with programs for her Girl Scout troops in the early 1980's. When he was a forester with the Georgia Forestry Commission working in a rapidly developing urban area (Gwinnett Co.), he presented many programs on the importance of forest resources and why urban forestry is important in Georgia. Susan was also aware of this and included urban forestry in her scout training projects. After Susan became a PLT facilitator, she continued to include urban forestry topics in her PLT activities.
Dale, Jennifer and the PLT Steering Committee feel that Susan has greatly contributed to environmental education, not just as a PLT educator but in her early years as a scout leader. Her enthusiasm for the natural world is what makes Susan such a good instructor for Project Learning Tree and we all feel she is deserving of this recognition.
